What was Aksum? Aksum was an African Kingdom that reached the height of power in the fourth century.
What was the main religion in Aksum? Traditional Aksum religion was polytheistic, but later became Christianity. People combined practices from both religions.
What from Aksum has carried over to present day? Aksum is now Ethiopia and Eritrea, which is now still centers for Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Churches.
What was a popular trading enter in Aksum and what drew people to it? Aksum's Port City of Adulis was it's main, powerful trading center. It was appealing because this center was cosmopolitan.
When and under what leader did Aksum reach its greatest power? Aksum reached its peak power between AD 325-260 under the powerful rule of Ezana.
Where is Aksum traced back to? Aksum is traced back to the the King of Solomon. The first mention of Aksum was in a Greek guidebook in AD 100
Who was Ezana? Ezana was a powerful Aksumite ruler. He destroyed the Kush capitol of Meroe, conquered Yemen, & took over Kush in AD 320
How did Aksumites adapt to their rugged, hilly environment? Aksumites invented terraces, which are constructed ridges on mountain slopes to help soil retain water.
Aside from terraces, what other innovations did Aksumites develop into their environment? Aksumites made use of canals to channel water from streams to fields. They also built dams and cisterns to store water.
What was the main language in Aksum and what was unique about it? The main language in Aksum was Ge'ez & Aksum and Meroe were the only kingdoms to establish their own written language.
Why was Aksum currency unique? Aksum currency was unique because they were the only ones South of Sahara to mint their own coins in bronze, silver, and gold.
What was Ezana's main goal of their coins? Each Aksum coin said "May the country be satisfied" because Ezana wanted people to know he had their interests at heart.
How and when did Christianity become the official religion of Aksum? Christianity was brought to Aksum through trading. Ezana converted to Christianity and made it the official religion.
Why was Aksum as a whole powerful in international trading? Aksum had access to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. It was also a hub for caravan routes.
What was the diverse cultural heritage of Aksum? The cultural heritage of Aksum came from Arabia and Kush.
What enabled Aksum to strive for so long and what caused the end of this? Aksum strived for 800 years because of cultural and economical achievements, but this ended due to Islamic Invaders.
What did Islamic Invaders gain from conquering Aksum? After conquering Aksum, Islamic Invaders gained territory and were able to spread their religion.
How was Aksum's power affected after the invasions? Aksum's political power, spiritual identity, environment, and international trading power declined. Adulis was destroyed.
Where did Aksumites go/what did they do after invasion? After invasion, Aksum rulers moved their capitol to Ethiopia in the mountains, which was isolated from other cities.
Why did Aksum leaders isolate their community? Aksum leaders wanted to isolate their community to avoid the spread of Islam.
What was the overall impact that Aksum left? Aksum left many legacies and traditions, however they had never spread outside of a small area of ruling.
