Special Use Airspace

QuestionAnswer
(Area 6) Information about the controlling agency for the restricted area designated as R-6606 may be located in Figure 20 the information panel of the sectional chart. The information panel in each Sectional Chart contains information about all special use airspace depicted on that chart, including Restricted, Prohibited, Warning, Alert, and Military Operations Areas.
(Area 1) A prospective client would like you to use your UA to inspect crops in the area five miles northwest of the town of Binford. This proposed operation Figure 26 requires permission from the controlling agency. The proposed operation will take place within a restricted area. Per FAR 107.45, UA operation within restricted areas requires permission from the controlling agency.
Area 5) How would a remote PIC "CHECK NOTAMS" as noted in the CAUTION box regarding the unmarked balloon? Figure 20 By obtaining a briefing via an online source such as: 1800WXBrief.com. The only source listed that provides information about NOTAMs is the 1800WXBrief.com website
You have been hired by a farmer to use your small UA to inspect his crops. The area that you are to survey is in the Devil's Lake West MOA, east of area 2. How would you find out if the MOA is active? Refer to the chart legend.
What type of activity should you expect when operating a UA near an Alert Area? A high volume of manned aircraft activity due to flight training or other unusual activity
The operational status of a Warning Area can be located in the Sectional Chart.
How are Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) charted? TFRs are not charted. Temporary Flight Restrictions are not charted because they are temporary in nature, subject to change, and usually established between chart cycles.
Flight through a Controlled Firing Area is unrestricted.
The purpose of checking NOTAMs before flight is to obtain information about airspace restrictions. TFRs may be issue with little advance notice via the NOTAM system, which is why it is important to check NOTAMs before each flight.
Area 4) What hazards to aircraft may exist in restricted areas such as R-5302B? Figure 20 Unusual, often invisible, hazards such as aerial gunnery or guided missiles.
Alert Areas are Areas of high volume pilot training
Military Operational Areas MOA are Area with military training necessitating aerobatic or abrupt flight maneuvers
(Area 2) The chart shows a gray line with "VR1667, VR1617, VR1638, and VR1668." Could this area present a hazard to the operations of a small UA? Figure 59 Yes, this is a Military Training Route with operations below 1,500 feet AGL. MTRs are routes used by military aircraft to maintain proficiency in tactical flying. These routes are usually established below 10,000 feet MSL 250 knots.
MTRs that are entirely below 1,500 feet AGL are identified by four numbers (e.g., IR1206, VR1207). These MTRs are therefore below 1,500 feet AGL and pose a hazard to UA.
MTRs that include one or more segments above 1,500 feet AGL are identified by three numbers (e.g., IR206, VR207)
Why are MOAs established? To separate certain military activities from IFR traffic.
Checking the NOTAMs confirms the Blue Angels are scheduled to perform at the local airport. When can UAS operations resume relative to this NOTAM? With ATC authorization. NOTAM that describes the effective times, location of the airspace, and restrictions. Under 91.145(d)(1), ATC may authorize operation within the restricted airspace.
You have been hired to photograph the 245-foot tower will take place at 1800Z. would be daggered !JMS JMS OBST MOORED BALLOON WITHIN AN AREA DEFINED AS 2NM RADIUS OF 470400N 983400W 2344FT (840FT AGL) DLY 0600-1900Figure 26 No, because the proposed operation will not take place in the same location as the balloon operation. The location is encoded as 470400N 983400W, which is 47° 04' N and 98° 34' W, and operation covers a 2 nautical miles radius from that location.
(West of Area 6) During preflight planning, your course is plotted to fly through R-2305. Where would you find additional information regarding this airspace? Figure 75 In the Special Use Airspace area of the chart.
(Area 2) What hazards to aircraft may exist in areas such as Devils Lake East MOA?Figure 26 Military training activities that necessitate aerobatic or abrupt flight maneuvers.
Operation of a UA in the area designated as R-6606 is Figure 20 permitted with permission of the controlling or using agency.
The operational status of a Prohibited Area can be located in the Sectional Chart.
When is the balloon operation in the following NOTAM scheduled to end? !JMS JMS OBST MOORED BALLOON WITHIN AN AREA DEFINED AS 2NM RADIUS OF 471400N 983400W 2344FT (840FT AGL) 1609250600-1809251700. September 25, 2018 at 1700 UTC time. The effective date is encoded as 1609250600-1809251700, which translates to September 25, 2016 at 0600Z to September 25, 2018 at 1700Z. NOTAM times are always UTC (Zulu) time unless the time zone is given (e.g., EST)
Your surveying company is a title sponsor for a race team at the Indianapolis 500.The FAA has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the race in the area you plan to fly. In this situation the TFR applies to all aircraft; you may not fly in the area without a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization.
(Area 3) What type military flight operations should a pilot expect along IR 644? IFR training flights above 1,500 feet AGL at speeds in excess of 250 knots.
