| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| soluble | capable of dissolving in a particular solvent |
| solution | a homogeneous mixture of two or more substance uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase |
| solvent | in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves |
| solute | in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent |
| suspension | a mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas |
| colloids | a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and these in suspensions and that are suspended in a liquid |
| tyndall effect | light scattering by particles in a colloid or in a very fine suspension. |
| electrolyte | a substance that dissolves in water to give solution that conducts an electric current |
| nonlectrolyte | a substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that gives not conduct an electric current |
| solution equilibrium | the physical state in which the opposing process of dissolution and crystalization of solute occur at equal rates |
| saturated solution | a solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved under the condition at which the solution exists. |
| supersaturated solution | a solution that contains more than the average solvent that can be dissolved at a given temperature. |
| solubility | the maximum concentration of a solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature. |
| hydration | the replacement of body fluids lost through sweating, exhaling, and eliminating waste. |
| immiscible | not forming a homogeneous mixture when added together. |
| miscible | forming a homogeneous mixture when added together. |
| Henry's law | a law stating that the mass of a dissolved gas in a given volume of solvent at equilibrium is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas. |
| effervescence | the formation of gas bubbles in a liquid by a chemical reaction. |
| enthalpy of a solution | the amount of energy released or absorved as heat when a specific |
| concentration | the quantity of solute present in a given quantity of solution. |
| molarity | the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter of solution. |
| maolality | total moles of a solute contained in a kilogram of a solvent. |
