Unit 9: Solutions

TermDefinition
soluble dissolving in particular solvent
solution a homogenous mixture of two or more substances
solvent the substance the solute dissolves in
solute dissolves the solvent
suspension a mixture in which particles of material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout liquid or gas
colloids a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspensions that are suspended in a liquid
tyndall effect colloids that appear to be homogenous because the particles are not visible
electrolyte a substance that dissolves in water to give a solution and conducts an electrical current
nonelectrolyte substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that does not conduct electric currents
solution equilibrium the physical state in which the opposing process of dissolution of solutes occur at equal rates
unsaturated solution solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution does and is able to dissolve an additional solute
supersaturated solution solution that holds more dissolved solute than it is required to reach a given equilibrium
solubility ability of one substance to dissolve in another at a given temp and pressure
hydration the strong affinity of water molecules for particles of dissolved substances that cause electrolic disfunction
immiscible two or more substances that don't mix with each other
miscible two or more liquids that can dissolve within each other
Henry's law at a constant temperature the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly porportional to the partial pressure of the gas on a liquid
effervescence bubbling of a liquid caused by rapid escape of gas instead of boiling
enthalpy of a solution the amount of energy released or absorbed as heat by a system during a process at constant pressure
concentration the amount of a particular substance is given quantity of a mixture solution or ore
molarity the concentration unit of a solution expressed per liter of solution
molality concentration of solution expressed in moles of solute per kilogram of solvent

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
