| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Physical change | A change that results in a substance changing states of matter, generally reversed. |
| Chemical change | A change that results in new substances bring formed , usually difficult to reverse. |
| Matter | All substances around us that has mass and occupies volume. |
| Atom | Tiny particles that make up matter. |
| Electron | Negatively charged sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom. Surrounds the atomic nucleus. |
| Proton | Positively charged sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom. |
| Neutron | Sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom, contains no charge and found in the centre of the atom. |
| Element | Consists of one type of atom. |
| Compound | Consists of two or more different elements chemically bonded. |
| Molecule | Consists of two of the same or different elements chemically bonded. |
| Diatomic molecule | consists of two of the same elements chemically bonded. |
| Pure substance | Matter made up of one type of particle that cannot be separated physically. |
| Impure (mixture) substance | Matter made up of different particles that can only be separated physically. |
| Atomic number | In a neutral atom, it is the number of electrons as well as the number of protons. |
| Mass number | Is the number of protons and neutrons in an atom. |
| Valence electrons | Electrons found in the outer most energy level (electron shell) |
| Ions | A charged atom. |
| Cations | Positively charged ions |
| Anions | Negatively charged ions |
| Reactants in a chemical equation | A substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction |
| Product/s in a chemical equation | A substance that is present at the end of a chemical reaction. |
