| Term | Definition |

| Acid | A substance that releases hydrogen (H+) ions when dissolved in water, tastes sour and has a pH value of less than 7. |
| Base | A substance that releases hydroxide (OH-) ions when dissolved in water, tastes bitter, feels slippery and has a pH value of more than 7. |
| Alkali | A base that is soluble in water. |
| Concentrated | A solution with a lot of solute dissolved in. |
| Dilute | A solution with only a small amount of solute dissolved in it. |
| pH scale | A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. |
| Indicator | Substances whose solutions change color due to changes in pH, Can identify if a substance is acidic or basic. |
| Neutralisation | Occurs when an acid reacts with a base |
| Salt | Substance produced by the reaction of an acid with a base. Consists of a positive ion and a negative ion forming a compound. |
| Corrosive | Chemically breaks down a substance it comes into contact with. |
| Malleable | Can be bent into shape without breaking or cracking. |
| Ductile | Can be stretched into wires or hammered into thin sheets. |
| Lustre | Shinny in appearance. |
| Sonorous | Makes a ringing sound when hit. |
| Conductor | A material that allows heat or electricity to move through. |
| Insulator | A material that does not allow heat or electricity to move through. |
| Ion | Charged atom |
| Alloy | A mixture of two or more metals and or a metal and non-metal |
