Animal Farm Pre-reading Vocabulary.

| allegory | a deeper message than what appears on the surface. |
| point of view | the perspective the story is told from. |
| dramatic irony | when the audience knows something the characters don't. |
| situational irony | something happening that is the opposite of what's expected. |
| kennings | two-word descriptions used instead of a name. |
| fable (beast) | a story where animals have human actions and feelings. |
| theme | moral or overall lesson of a story. |
| utopia | imaginary society with near-perfect qualities. |
| dystopia | imaginary society where people are suffering and face great injustice. |
| satire | using humor and exaggeration to criticize something. |
| justice | good characters are rewarded, bad characters are punished. |
| sarcasm | saying the opposite of what you really mean with a mocking or derisive term. |
| wit | to use words in a quick, clever way. |
| euphenism | word or phrase used to soften an uncomfortable topic. |
| Capitalism | Trade industry ran by private owners for their own profit. |
| Communism | Classless society where people work to their abilities, are paid what they need, and all major means of production are owned by the public. |
| Fascism | Government controls people's lives and they can't disagree. |
| Socialism | Facilities that make goods, such as farms and factories, are publicly owned. |
