theme | An underlying central idea or message that runs through a work of literature, which can be expressed in a complete sentence. |
tone | the attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character |
protagonist | the main character; the good guy |
antagonist | the person or force working against the main character |
denotation | the literal dictionary definition of a word |
connotation | the feelings and associations that a word suggests |
internal conflict | psychological struggle within the mind of a literary or dramatic character, the resolution of which creates the plot's suspense` |
external conflict | struggle between a character and an outside force such as natural or another character |
point of view | perspective from which a story is told |
setting | the time and place in which the events of a work of literature take place |
plot | series of related events that make up a story |
symbol | a word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of something else and is not literally true |
foreshadowing | the use of clues to suggest events that will happen later in the plot |
mood | overall emotion created by a work of literature (reader's feeling) |
1st person | the story is told by one of the characters in the story ("I") |
3rd person | the narrator is outside the story and uses the pronoun he, she, or they to tell the story |
3rd person omniscient | the story is told from an all-knowing viewpoint. The narrator can dip into the head of any of the characters and reveal things that have occurred in the past or will happen in the future. |
3rd person limited | the narrator focuses on the thoughts and feelings of only one character |
nonfiction | prose writing dealing with the facts |
fiction | any story created by the imagination |
dialogue | a literary technique in which writers employ two or more characters to be engaged in conversation with each other |
