Verbs 1 Pronominaux

Grammar

QuestionAnswer
Verbes pronominaux réciproques- definition Subjects act on one another. Nous nous connaissons.
Verbes pronominaux reflexive - definition Subject acts on itself. Je me lève.
Verbs pronominaux - past participle agreement rule Reflexive pronouns represent either the direct object or the indirect object of the verb. Agreement required only if reflexive pronoun is a direct object; if it’s indirect, there’s no agreement.
Verbs pronominaux - past participle agreement example (reflexive pronoun = indirect) Past participle remains unchanged Ils se sont lavé les mains.
Verbes pronominaux - past participle agreement rule Exception If direct object precedes verb in the sentence, past participle agrees in number and gender with the DIRECT OBJECT. Les mains qu'ils se sont lavées. Paul est très satisfait des chaussures qu'il s'est achetées.
Verbs pronominaux - past participle agreement example (reflexive pronoun = direct) Past participle agrees gender and number with subject Je me suis lavé(e). Tu t'es lavé(e). Il/Elle s'est lavé(e). Nous nous sommes lavé(e)s. Vous vous êtes lavé(e)s. Ils/Elles se sont lavé(e)s.
Verbs ONLY used reflexively (examples) Verbs that have sense only if used pronominally (see vocab list)
Verbs pronominaux - Imperative forms Affirmative: Tais-toi !' Taisons-nous ! Taisez-vous ! Negative: Ne te tais pas ! Ne nous taisons pas ! Ne vous taisez pas ! (no hyphen)
Verbs pronominaux - reflexive pronoun always indirect object (p.p. of verb never agrees with pronoun) Why? Because when used non-pronominally with a noun, these verbs require a preposition, which means the noun is an indirect object. When that preposition + object is replaced by a reflexive pronoun, the pronoun too is indirect. (see vocab list)
Verbs pronominaux - used in place of passive voice Reflexive form sometimes preferred over passive voice, particularly when subject is "on" (i.e., in generalizations). On voit le château de loin-->Le château se voit de loin. Le vin blanc se boit quand il est frais.
