TermDefinition
theme an underlying central idea or message that runs through a work of literature, which can be expressed in a complete sentence.
author's purpose The reason the author has for writing. (inform, persuade, describe, & entertain)
literary text writing that is creative and mainly fictional, novels, drama, short stories.
informational text writing that presents facts and explanations of ideas.
supporting details reasons, facts, examples or other evidence that explain the main idea
central idea main point of a text
summary brief restatement of the facts or statements already made
objective factual, without personal opinion or feeling
paraphrase to reword a statement made by someone else
plagiarize to present someone else's words or ideas as one's own
explicit detail concrete, specifically stated detail or text
implicit detail an assumption derived from an explicit detail or text
inference a conclusion based on what you read and what you already know
objective summary clearly and accurately focuses on the main idea/central idea
characteristics of an objective summary gives central idea/main idea with no quotes
