| author's purpose | The reason the author has for writing. (inform, persuade, describe, & entertain) |
| literary text | writing that is creative and mainly fictional, novels, drama, short stories. |
| informational text | writing that presents facts and explanations of ideas. |
| supporting details | reasons, facts, examples or other evidence that explain the main idea |
| central idea | main point of a text |
| summary | brief restatement of the facts or statements already made |
| objective | factual, without personal opinion or feeling |
| paraphrase | to reword a statement made by someone else |
| plagiarize | to present someone else's words or ideas as one's own |
| explicit detail | concrete, specifically stated detail or text |
| implicit detail | an assumption derived from an explicit detail or text |
| inference | a conclusion based on what you read and what you already know |
| objective summary | clearly and accurately focuses on the main idea/central idea |
