Sentence Types

| simple sentence | subject + predicate She loves to play basketball. |
| compound sentence | made up of two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) and a comma or by a semicolon 1 subj + 1 pred, and 1 subj + 1 pred |
| complex sentence | combines a dependent clause with an independent clause clause/phrase, sentence OR sentence, clause/phrase |
| compound complex sentence | comprised of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses 1 subj. + 1 pred, and 1 subj + 1 pred, clause/phrase OR clause/phrase, 1 subj + 1 pred, and 1 sub + 1 pred |
| independent clause | a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought subject+predicate |
| dependent clause | a group of words that starts with a conjunctions, contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought |
| conjunction | a word used to connect clauses, nouns, verbs |
| pronouns | words you substitute for other nouns when your reader or listener already knows which nouns you're referring to ex: I/me, she/her, he/him, they/them, we/us, you |
| introductory clause | clause at the beginning of a sentence |
| dangling modifier | a word or phrase that doesn't have a key word to describe |
| prepositional phrase | phrase containing a preposition |
| noun clause | subordinate clause being used as a noun |
| adverb clause | clause that answers why, how much, how many, or where when describing a verb, adverb, adjective |
| adjective clause | clause used to describe a noun or pronoun |
