Earth in Space

QuestionAnswer
rotation Earth spinning around its axis once every 24 hours, resulting in day and night.
revolution The movement of Earth in its orbit around the sun resulting in a year.
orbit The path an object follows as it travels around another object in space.
summer solstice About June 21, when the sun is directly shining on the northern hemisphere providing the most hours of sunlight.
winter solstice About December 21, when the sun is directly shining on the southern hemisphere providing the least hours of sunlight.
vernal equinox About March 21, when neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun. On this day, all areas of the Earth have equal hours of day and night.
autumnal equinox About September 21, when neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun. On this day, all areas of the Earth have equal hours of day and night.
