TermDefinition
Northwest Passage The North American continent was in the way of Europeans desire to trade with Asia. European explorers hoped to find a water route through North America called the “Northwest Passage.”
The Columbian Exchange Widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, humans, technology, and ideas between Europe/Africa and the Americas following 1492 voyage of Columbus.
Feudalism A political and economic system in medieval Europe [400s- 1400s] where serfs [peasants] were tied to the land that was owned by the elite [nobility]. The serfs worked the land in exchange for protection and food from elite.
Encomienda System A system of labor in Spanish North America (early 1500s). Spanish elite would protect and teach Christianity and the American Indians assigned to them would be forced to give them goods and labor. This system was slowly replaced by African slavery.
Capitalism An economic system that became more widespread in the 1400- 1600s where private ownership of businesses and factories and the desires of individuals in a market [place to exchange goods and services] organize the economy.
Spanish Requirement of 1513 Read to American Indians when Spanish met them to inform them of their right of conquest as given by God. American Indians who resisted were considered evil. The reading was meant to remove Spain's responsibility for horrific acts committed against them.
