South Carolina History Reconstruction Vocab

TermDefinition
Reconstruction The period of rebuilding after the CIvil War
Freedmen’s Bureau A Beuro to assist poor blacks and some poor whites and provide direct welfare.
Sharecropping farming in which families rent small plots of land from a landowner in return for a portion of their crop, to be given to the landowner at the end of each year
Tenant Farmer A farmer who worked someone else’s property
Black Codes laws to restrict free black people
Radical Republicans Northerners who pushed most for civil rights for freedmen and changes in southern behavior
Impeach Accuse and bring charges against a public official
Carpetbagger Northerners who moved to the South. (Wanted to help rebuild the South)
Scalawag Southern whites who cooperated with blacks & Republicans.
Sharecrop System a landowner would divide his property into family sized farms, and a laborer's family work the farm
Crop-lien system owners and sharecroppers would have to buy farm equipment and supplies from merchant using credit
Red Shirt Campaign was designed to intimidate voters, be visible, and impress everyone with the Democrats’ determination. Supported Wade Hampton III and other democrats in SC.
Confiscate Taking something with authority. (example: Sherman taking land)
Compensate To give somebody something in recognition for loss or suffering
Constitution of 1866 Created a "white man's government intended for white men only."
14th Amendment Extended citizenship to AAs and promised them equal protection under the law.
Civil Rights Act of 1866 Created before 14th Amendment to protect Freedmen's rights. South did not respect it, so 14th Amendment was created.
The Election of 1876 in SC Election that had a lot of fraud. Democrats supported Hampton and Republicans support Chamberlain for governor. No clear winner.
KKK Hate group founded in TN. Wanted to resist anonymously by dressing in white hoods and robes.
Enforcement Acts Also known as the KKK Act
Rollin Sisters Influential sisters of color who played a role in SC during Reconstruction
Martial Law The South was divided into 5 military districts to enforce Radical Reconstruction
SC Land Commission Allowed poor whites and poor black people to purchase land at reasonable prices.
Constitution of 1868 Gave equal treatment to all races. Required statewide public education. Started a welfare program. Recognized rights for women. Removed property ownership requirements for holding office
Reconstruction Accomplishments Guaranteed citizenship to AA, equal protection of the laws and secured voting rights for Black men. Black students going to school. Freedpeople formed political, social and religious institutions. Blacks and whites working together.
