| Term | Definition |

| author's attitude | How the author feels about the information in a text (positive, negative, or neutral) |
| author's purpose | Why the author wrote: to entertain, persuade, explain, describe, etc. |
| expository text | non-fiction genre of literature - facts |
| chronological order | listing events as they happen in time. What happened first, second, next, etc. |
| genre | a literary category (biography, fiction, folk tale, etc.) |
| inference | to understand information that is not directly stated |
| narrative | In story form, with characters, setting, and plot |
| stanza | A group of lines in a poem |
| sensory language | words used to help the reader feel, taste, see, smell, or hear |
| persuasive text | literature that is meant to convince someone |
