Chapter 10

8th : Force and Motion

QuestionAnswer
What were Galileo’s contributions to motion theory? 1. conducted his own exp found that falling objects all acc at the same rate 2.discovered that the distance fallen is proportional to the square of the time of the fall 3.objects will continue moving unless a F is present to stop them 4.1st friction F
What is 1st Law of Motion? a body at rest will remain at rest and a body in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an external force
What is 2nd Law of Motion? the force acting on a object is equal to the mass of that object times its acceleration (F=ma)
What is the 3rd Law of Motion? for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is inertia? property possessed by all matter. because of this property, matter resists change to its state of motion. amount of inertia in a substance is measured by the quantity mass.
give an example of 1st law an object at rest, car with cruise control on, table cloth quickly pulled from under the dishes and the dishes remain at rest
give an example of 2nd law any accelerating object like a rocket or a car can illustrate this law but the law is only illustrated by things that are CHANGING their state of motion
give an example of 3rd law Joe pushes on the wall with his hand and the wall pushes back equally. In other words, Joe pushes the wall and the wall pushes Joe
What is velocity? a quantity that describes how fast an object is moving and in which direction
What are friction forces? force that causes an object to slow down
What is the law of inertia? a body at rest will remain at rest and a body in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an external force (Newton's 1st Law)
use both acceleration equations and velocity equation F=ma a=vf/t v=d/t

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
