| Inert | Not chemically reactive; used to describe a substance |
| Liquid | A state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape |
| Matter | Anything that has volume and mass |
| Molecule | The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist; formed when two or more atoms join together chemically |
| Pressure | Force exerted on matter through contact with other matter; affects melting and boiling points |
| Pure Substance | A single substance, either an element or compound, with definite composition and properties |
| Solid | A state of matter with definite volume and shape |
| States of Matter | Distinct forms fo matter known in everyday experience; solid, liquid, and gas; also referred to as phases |
| Temperature | Average kinetic energy of all the particles in a material; measured by a thermometer in degrees |
| Thermal Energy | The total kinetic (motion) energy of the tiny particles that make up matter; the faster the particles move, the warmer the matter becomes |
