Electromagnetism
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Electric Current | the flow of charges (electrons) through a conductor; in units of Amperes or Amps (A) |
| Point Charge | a very small volume whose charge acts as if it is concentrated at the center |
| Magnetic Field | a region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts (in units of Tesla) |
| Solenoid | a coil of wire with an electric current running through it |
| Electromagnet | a coil wrapped around an iron core that acts as a magnet when an electric current is running though it |
| Iron Core | increases the strength of the magnetic field within a solenoid |
| Magnetic Induction | process by which a changing magnetic field produces current in a nearby coil of wire (a.k.a. Faraday's Law) |
| Electric Force | attractive (opposite charge) or repulsive force (same) between charged objects |
| Magnetic Force | attractive (opposite poles) or repulsive force (same) between magnetic objects |
| Motor | transforms electric current into motion via electromagnetism |
| Generator | transforms motion into electric current via magnetic induction |
| Electrical Energy | energy of moving electrons (current) |
| Mechanical Energy | the energy associated with the motion of everyday objects (a.k.a. kinetic energy) |
| Electromagnetism | process by which electricity creates magnetism |
| Permanent Magnet | material that keeps its magnetism |
| Temporary Magnet | material that does not keep its magnetism (ex: an electromagnet) |
| Commutator | device that controls the direction of the flow of current through an electric motor |
| Magnetic Pole | one of two opposite ends of a magnet (North or South) |
| Alternating Current | when current flows from a generator, it reverses direction many times a second |
| Direct Current | when current only flows in a single direction, like from a battery |
| Oersted's Experiment | showed moving electrons (current through a wire) could create a magnetic field by interacting with a compass |
| Galvanometer | device that measures electric current (a.k.a. an ammeter) |
| Magnitude | size or amount (number) |
