Conditions

1. Enslaved people were kept below deck where the smell was terrible.
2. The ships were so crowded that people could hardly move.
3. There was very little fresh air and people struggled to breathe.
4. Many people were chained together and the chains hurt them.
5. Disease spread quickly and many people became very sick.
6. Many enslaved people became very sick and died during the journey because of the terrible conditions on the ships.
7. The noise of crying, shouting, and groaning made the ship a place of horror.
