TermDefinition
equals sign A symbol of equality, =
equation A mathematical sentence showing two expressions are equal. An equation that contains an equal sign. =
guess, check and revise strategy A strategy used to solve a problem which involves narrowing in on the correct answer using educated guesses.
solution The value of a variable that makes an equation true.
solve To replace a variable with a value that results in a true sentence.
inverse operations Operations which undo each other. For example, addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
subtraction property of equality If you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal.
