Molecules and Compound

QuestionAnswer
What is Avogadro number? The number of atoms in the atomic mass of an element, or the number of molecules in the formula mass of a compound when these masses are expressed in grams.
What is chemical bond? An attraction between two or more different atoms that bonds them together.
What is chemical formula? A representation of a compound that includes the symbols and numbers of atoms in the compound.
What is covalent bond? A type of chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons.
What is diatomic molecule? A molecule that has only two atoms of the same element.
What is energy level? A region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are most likely to be found.
What is formula mass? Determined by adding up the atomic mass units of all the atoms in the compound; a way to compare the masses of molecules of different compounds.
What is ionic bond? A type of chemical bond in which electrons are transferred between atoms, converting the atoms in ions.
What is ion? An atom, which by the gain or loss of one or more electrons, has an electrical charge.
What is monoatomic ion? Ions that contain only one type of atom.
What is octet? An atom's eight valence electrons.
What is polyatomic ion? Ion that contains more than one type of atom.
What is polymer? A large molecule that is composed of repeating smaller molecules called subunits or monomers.
What is react? Describes how atoms interact when forming a chemical bond with another atom.
What is subscript? A number in a chemical formula that show the number of a type of atom.
What is valcence electron? The electrons in an atom that are involved in the formation of chemical bonds.
What is a binary compound? A covalent compound that consists of only two types of elements.
What is oxidation number? Indicates how many electrons are lost, or gained, or shared when bonding occurs.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
