QuestionAnswer
Bend tangent line? Located where the metal starts to bend and the metal stops curving.
Bend line? Set even with the nose of the brake and acts as a guide for bending.
Bend radius? Measured from a radius center to the inside surface of the metal.
Total development? Width of the material, measured around the bends from edge to edge.
Setback? The distance from the mold point to the bend tangent line (=k(R+T).
Open angle? An angle that is more than 90 degrees when measured between legs.
Mold line? Line formed by extending the outside surface of the leg and flange to a point in space.
Leg? The longer part of a formed angle.
Bend allowance? The curved section of metal within the bend. Found by using a chart with Thickness and Radius as X and Y axis.
Flange? The shorter part of a formed angle
K factor? Corresponds to one of the angles to which metal can be bent. Found using a chart.
Neutral axis? An imaginary line that has the same length after bending as it did before.
Flat? The base measurement minus the setback (=MLD-SB).
Mold point? The point of intersection of the mold lines.
Closed angle? An angle that is more than 90 degrees when the amount of bend is measured.
Grain of metal? Bend should preferably be made to lie at an angle to this width.
Order of operation for calculating bends? Using the given Bend degree, Radius, and Thickness we can find the Kfactor and setback. Then we can find the bend allowance using our given values. Base measure minus SB to find Flat of each side, add together with BA.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
