Term | Definition |
---|---|
Energy | The ability to do work or cause change |
Joules | Measurement of work and energy |
Electromagnetic | Energy that travels in waves, like light and sound |
Nuclear | Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
Kinetic | Energy that an object has due to its motion |
Mechanical | Energy that associated with position AND motion (potential and kinetic) |
Chemical | Energy that is stored in chemical bonds |
Potential | Energy that results from an object's position or shape |
Thermal | Energy that given off from objects with heat |
Electrical | Energy of electrical charges |
Renewable | Solar power, wind power |
NON renewable | Coal, Gasoline (Most of the US powered by nonrenewable energy sources) |
Law of Conservation of Enegry | Energy cannot be created or destroyed |
Conversion | Change from one type of energy to another (A moving windmill changes kinetic/mechanical energy into electrical energy, A toaster changes electrical energy into thermal energy, A roller coaster changes potential energy to kinetic energy.). |
Conversion (cont.) | (The most gravitational potential energy is at the highest point of the roller coaster, and The most kinetic energy is when the ride falls down the highest part of the roller coaster.) |
