Cause and effect When an author explains what makes things happen, and the things that happen as a result of those causes.
Characteristic A distinguishing quality or feature that someone or something has.
Compare and Contrast When an author explains how topics are similar and different
Description When an author tells about a topic and its characteristics with details and adjectives
Informational Text A type of nonfiction that teaches the reader about a topic related to the natural world or society.
Nonfiction Writing that describes facts and real events; not fiction
Problem and Solution When an author explains a problem and how it is solved
Sequence When an author tells about events in the order they happened
Text Structure The way an author organizes information in a text n
Caption An explanation or description for a picture
Diagram A drawing or picture that shows how something works or shows the different parts of something
Glossary A list of technical or special words with their definitions in a book, usually found at the end of the book
Graph A drawing or diagram that visually shows how two or more pieces of information are related
Heading A word or phrase that is placed at the top of a piece of writing and gives it a title
Index An alphabetical list of specific information that can be found in a book and the page number to find it. It is usually found at the end of a book
Nonfiction Writing that describes facts and real events; not fiction
Photograph A picture made by a camera
Subheading A title for a subdivision of text
Table of Contents A list of all the big topics or chapters in a book in the order they'll be presented
