Organic Nomeclature
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| hydrocarbon chain or ring with only C--C single bonds | alkane |
| R-Cl | hydrocarbon bonded to a halogen = alkyl halide |
| R --OH | hydroxyl functional group. To name the alcohol, drop the 'e' of the alkane and add 'ol' |
| alkyne | hydrocarbon chain or ring with one or more C--C triple bonds |
| special 6 carbon ring with alternating double bonds | benzene |
| R--C=O | aldehyde. This carbonyl functional group must be on carbon 1 |
| carboxyl group and a carbonyl group bonded to same carbon | carboxylic acid |
| an alcohol bonded to a carboxylic acid | ester |
| amine | R--NH2 |
| amide | a carbonyl group bonded to a nitrogen as part of a hydrocarbon chain |
| ether | R--O--R |
| formed by the hydrolysis of an amide | an alcohol and an amine |
| functional group | special part of a hydrocarbon that greatly influences its physical and chemical properties. Train your eye to recognise these! |
| CH3 C(O) CH3 | must be a ketone since the carbonyl group isn't on carbon 1 |
| meta prefix on a benzene ring | means the branches are on C 1 and C3 |
| secondary alcohol | the carbon attached to the hydroxyl group is itself bonded to 2 carbons |
| ester | R-C(O)(OH) |
