TermDefinition
Stanza A group of lines forming a unit in a poem. Is similar to a paragraph in prose. Typically, in a poem is separated by a line of space.
Transcendentalism A philosophical and literary movement whose followers believed that basic truth could be reached only by going "beyond" reason and reflecting on the word of the spirit an on one's own deep and free intuition.
Thesis The main idea of a work of nonfiction. May be stated directly or implied.
Vernacular Ordinary speech of a particular country or region. Is more casual than cultivated, formal speech. Slang and dialect are commonly described as this. Regional writers sometimes employ this for enhanced realism.
Tone A reflection of a writer's or speaker's attitude toward the subject matter, as conveyed through elements such as word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and figures of speech. Might convey a variety of attitudes such as sympathy or objectivity.
