| plateau | a flat area of land that is higher than the land around it. It's like a mountain but with a flat top. |
| boast | to talk with a lot of pride about something that you have or something that you did. For example, if you get an A+ on your test and you tell your friends about it and say that you're the smartest kid in the class, that's boasting. |
| treacherous | something or someone that is dangerous, unpredictable, or not to be trusted. It can be used to describe a situation that is risky, like walking on a slippery surface or driving on a road with a lot of curves. |
| instinct | a natural feeling or behavior that animals and humans are born with. It's something that you just know how to do without being taught. |
| swarming | a large group of things or people move together quickly and closely, like a big crowd. It's kind of like when you see a lot of bees flying together around a hive or a lot of fish swimming together in the ocean. |
| dehydration | when your body doesn't have enough water to function properly |
| burrows | tunnels or holes that animals dig in the ground or in other materials, like trees or plants. |
| scurry | to move quickly and hurriedly, like a little animal running around. |
| halting | stopping or pausing in a hesitant or uncertain way |
| crustaceans | type of animal that live in the water, like crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. |
| overrun | To be overrun means to be taken over or overwhelmed by something or someone, like a playground that is overrun with children. |
| mate | a partner or companion. To come together to form a pair, like when two animals mate |
| breeding | to produce offspring, like when two animals mate to have babies. |
| prowl | o move around quietly and carefully, like a cat about to jump on its prey. |
| shoreline | the place where the land meets the water, like the edge of a lake or ocean |
| hatch | to come out of an egg by breaking the shell. |
| shed | to get rid of something old or no longer needed. When animals shed, they lose their old fur, skin, or feathers and grow new ones. |
| remote | something that is far away or distant. |
| boosting | to make something stronger or better |
| scrambling | a mix between walking and climbing, where you use your hands and feet to move up or down steep or rocky terrain |
