| Importance of sound | The way the words and lines wound will affect the mood, tone, fluency and possibly even the meaning of a poem |
| Rhyme | correspondence of sounds between different words, or ending of words |
| Internal rhymes | occur within a line, not the end "Once upon a midnight dreary, while i pondered, weak and weary." dreary, weary |
| End rhymes | Occur at the end of the lines "curious volume of forgotten lore, … rapping at my chamber door." |
| Assonance | repetition of vowels, repeating sounds in the words "Heaps and sweeps" |
| Alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds in adjacent or nearby words, repeat of sounds in the line. "Soon the Sun's warmth makes) |
| Consonance | repetition of consonant sounds anywhere within words, repeating sounds occur is in the middle of words (blow! bugles! blow!) |
| Onomatopoeia | Use of words that create the sounds they describe (razzes, crashes) |
