Poetic Sound Effects

English poem unit

Importance of sound The way the words and lines wound will affect the mood, tone, fluency and possibly even the meaning of a poem
Rhyme correspondence of sounds between different words, or ending of words
Internal rhymes occur within a line, not the end "Once upon a midnight dreary, while i pondered, weak and weary." dreary, weary
End rhymes Occur at the end of the lines "curious volume of forgotten lore, … rapping at my chamber door."
Assonance repetition of vowels, repeating sounds in the words "Heaps and sweeps"
Alliteration repetition of initial consonant sounds in adjacent or nearby words, repeat of sounds in the line. "Soon the Sun's warmth makes)
Consonance repetition of consonant sounds anywhere within words, repeating sounds occur is in the middle of words (blow! bugles! blow!)
Onomatopoeia Use of words that create the sounds they describe (razzes, crashes)
