| Meter | the rhythm of a piece of poetry, determined by the # and length of feet in a line. |
| rhythm | a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound |
| Syllable | A single unit of sound in a word, consisting of a vowel sound with or without surrounding consonants |
| Stressed syllable | a syllable that is emphasized |
| Foot | a combination of stressed and unstressed syllables. |
| Iamb | 2 syllables; unstressed - stressed UI |
| Trochee | 2 syllables; stressed - unstressed IU |
| Spondee | 2 syllables; stressed - stressed II |
| Anapest | 3 syllables; unstressed - unstressed - stressed UUI |
