Line Structure

English poem unit

TermDefinition
Line a part of a poem or song forming one row of written or printed words.
Lineation dictates when a line of poetry stops and new lines begin.
Length of line affects the speed you read it, and will affect the tone and meaning.
Single word on line The word may be emphasized
End-Stopped breaks in lines at the end of a line, denoted by a comma, period, semicolon, or other punctuation marks. Which create a brief pause between lines.
Enjambment Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence or clause over line-break; the thought runs on.
Caesurea A strong pause or stop within a line
Medial Caesura at the middle of a sentence
Initial Caesura at the beginning of the line
Terminal Caesura Towards the end of the line
