11 Biology Cell Basics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell membrane | Controls what comes in and out of a cell; found in animal and plant cells |
| Cell wall | Rigid outer layer of a plant cell |
| Cytoplasm | Gel-like fluid where the organelles are found |
| Mitochondria | Produces the energy a cell needs to carry out its functions |
| Lysosomes | Uses chemicals, called lysozymes, to break down food and worn out cell parts |
| Vacuoles | Stores food, water, wastes and other materials |
| Golgi Bodies | Receives proteins & materials from the ER, packages & distributes them |
| Chloroplasts | Captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in plant cells |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another |
| Ribosomes | Assembles amino acids to create proteins |
| Nucleus | Control centre of the cell; contains DNA |
| Nucleolus | Found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes |
| Chromatin | Tiny strands of DNA found inside the nucleus. They contain the instructions for directing the cell's function. |
| Cell | The basic structural unit of all life on Earth |
| Prokaryote | A simple type of cell that lacks a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Includes the domains Bacteria and Archea. |
| Eukaryote | A complex type of cell with a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Includes the Animal, Plant, Fungi and Protist Kingdomes. |
| Organelle | Specialised structures within cell that have specific functions |
| Cell Theory | States that all living things are composed of one or more cells, they are the basic unit of life and come from pre-existing cells |
| Biology | The study of life |
