The Spanish Colonies

What is a colony? a land ruled by another country
How did Spain protect its claims to land in North America? Spain built forts to protect its claims to land
What are plantations? large farms
What is slavery? the practice of holding people against their will and making them work without pay.
Why did Spain and Portugal force the Native Americans into slavery? These countries forced the Native Americans into slavery because they needed workers to grow crops and mine for gold and silver.
What felt that the Native American people were not being treated fairly? Bartolome de Las Casas spoke out in favor of better treatment of the Native Americans.
What are borderlands? areas of land on or near the borders between colonies, countries or regions.
What are presidios? forts that were built in the borderlands.
What is Pedro Menendez de Aviles known for? Pedro Menendez de Aviles built the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States. (Florida)
What are missions? small religious settlements.
What are haciendas? large estates or homes where cattle and sheep are raised.
What nation was the first to colonize the Americas? Spain
Why did Spain establish missions? to convert Native Americans to Christianity
