Science-unit 1 THE CELL
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | Covers the entire cell, acts like a gatekeeper to control movement of material in and out of the cell |
| Cell Wall | Rigid material that surrounds, protects and supports the cell membrane, Allows gases, water and some minerals to pass, but found only in plant cells |
| Centrioles | Small protein structure critical to cell division and found only in animal cells |
| Chloroplast | Organelle containing chlorophyll (photosynthesis) found only in plant cells |
| DNA | threadlike structure containing genetic or hereditary information and contains many different genes |
| cytoplasm | area of cell where nutrients are absorbed, transported and processed and contains different organelles |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Series of canals or interconnected tubes that carry material throughout cell |
| Golgi Body | Structure that modifies, sorts and package these proteins for delivery throughout the cell or outside the cell |
| Lysosomes | Saclike saturation formed by Golgi apparatus where digestion takes place and found only in animal cells |
| Mitochondrion | Tiny, oval shaped organelle that provides cells with energy |
| Nucleolus | Spherical structure within the nucleus of some cells that is probably involved in making proteins |
| Nucleus | Acts as the control centre directing all cell activities including growth and reproduction |
| Ribosomes | Organelle that builds proteins essential for the cell growth and reproduction |
| Vacuole | Small membrane-surrounded compartment that stores water, wastes and other material in both animal and plant cells (but larger in plant cells) |
