Science-unit 1 THE CELL

Cell Membrane Covers the entire cell, acts like a gatekeeper to control movement of material in and out of the cell
Cell Wall Rigid material that surrounds, protects and supports the cell membrane, Allows gases, water and some minerals to pass, but found only in plant cells
Centrioles Small protein structure critical to cell division and found only in animal cells
Chloroplast Organelle containing chlorophyll (photosynthesis) found only in plant cells
DNA threadlike structure containing genetic or hereditary information and contains many different genes
cytoplasm area of cell where nutrients are absorbed, transported and processed and contains different organelles
Endoplasmic Reticulum Series of canals or interconnected tubes that carry material throughout cell
Golgi Body Structure that modifies, sorts and package these proteins for delivery throughout the cell or outside the cell
Lysosomes Saclike saturation formed by Golgi apparatus where digestion takes place and found only in animal cells
Mitochondrion Tiny, oval shaped organelle that provides cells with energy
Nucleolus Spherical structure within the nucleus of some cells that is probably involved in making proteins
Nucleus Acts as the control centre directing all cell activities including growth and reproduction
Ribosomes Organelle that builds proteins essential for the cell growth and reproduction
Vacuole Small membrane-surrounded compartment that stores water, wastes and other material in both animal and plant cells (but larger in plant cells)
