Waves Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Wave Propagation of disturbance that travels
Medium Any materials/subtances that waves can propagate
Transverse Wave Motion in which every point on a wave oscillates along pathways that are perpendicular to the wave's forward motion
Longitudinal Wave Waves that travels when the medium's displacement moves in the same direction as the wave's travels.
Propagation The movement of waves
Compression Regions of high pressure due to particles being close together.
Rarefaction Regions of low pressure due to particles being spread further apart
Crest The highest part of the wave
Trough The lowest part of the wave
Amplitude Greatest displacement or distance traveled by a point on a wave or body of vibration in relation to its equilibrium position
Wavelength The distance between two crests or troughs of a wave
Frequency How many waves travel past in a unit of time
Period The amount of time needed for one wavelength to pass a particular location
EM Spectrum The range of all types of EM radiation
Diffraction The propagation of waves around obstacles
Reflection When light bounces off an object
Refraction Redirection of a wave as it passes through a different medium
Doppler Effect The shift in wave frequency that occurs as a wave source and its observer move in relation to one another.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
