Properties of Matter

| Physical property | - Any characteristic material that can be observed without changing the identity of the material itself |
| Chemical property | A characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a specific chemical change |
| Physical change | "- A change in the size, shape, color |
| Chemical change | The change of a substance to different substances |
| Pure Substance | a sample of matter with both definite and constant composition with distinct chemical properties; recipe does not change |
| Element | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by either physical or chemical means; the basic material that makes up all matte |
| Compound | a pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically combined in a set ratio (the recipe is always the same) |
| Molecule | a neutral particle made of two or more atoms joined in a chemical bond |
| Mixture | two or more substances that are mixed together but are not chemically combined; the recipe is changeable |
| Solution | a well-blended mixture, containing a solvent and at least one solute, which has the same properties throughout |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | a mixture in which pure substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture; you can see the different parts (Ex: salad, soil) |
| Homogeneous mixture | a mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture so that you cannot see the various parts (Ex: sweet tea) |
