Rocks and Minerals

TermDefinition
Bedrock The bottom layer of soil, made mostly of solid rock
Cleavage A mineral's ability to split easily along flat surfaces
Crystallization the process by which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure
Density The amount of mass something has in relation to its volume
Fracture A separation of rock, such as a fault of joint that divides the rock into two or more pieces
Hardness is a measure of the ability of a mineral to resist being scratched
Igneous Rock Rock formed when melted rock hardens
Inorganic Not consisting or deriving from living matter
Lava Magma that is exposed at Earth's surface
Lithification to cement or compress together
Luster ability to reflect light
Magma Melted rock within Earth
Metamorphic Rock Rock made from igneous or sedimentary rock that has been changed by pressure, high temperature, very hot water, or a combination of these factors
Mineral a natural, solid substance that has a definite chemical composition and physical structure
Rock Cycle All of the processes that change rock from one type to another
Sedimentary Rock Rock formed when layers of sediment settle and are cemented together
Streak is the color of the powder that is left behind when a mineral is rubbed on a piece of unglazed tile
Top Soil The top layer of soil, made in part from broken- up pieces of lower layers of rock
Metamorphism The process by which metamorphic rock is formed.
