| Isomers | A hydrocarbon that is set up a different way then it usually is |
| Saturated hydrocarbons | Hydrocarbons that only have single bonds |
| Unsaturated hydrocarbons | Hydrocarbons that contain bonds other then single |
| Alcohol | Formed when - OH (hydroxyl ion) replaces one or more hydrogens in a hydrocarbon. |
| Amino acid | Formed when a - COOH group and an - NH2 replace 2 hydrogens in a hydrocarbon. (amino acids are the building blocks for proteins. |
| Carboxylic acid | Formed when - COOH replaces a CH3 or a hydrogen in a hydrocarbon |
| Amine acid | Formed when - NH2 replaces a hydrogen in a hydrocarbon |
| ane ene yne | ane = single bond ene = double bond yne = triple bond |
| polymer | A polymer is any of a class of natural or synthetic substances composed of very large molecules |
| protein | Polymers formed from linking many amino acids Ex: enzymes, hemoglobin. |
| carbohydrate | Organic compounds with twice as many hydrogens as oxygens. Examples are sugars, starches. |
