concret poems a poem with a shape that suggests a subject. the poet arranges the letters, punctuation, and lines to create an image, or pic, on the page
couplet two cnsecutive linesof verse with end rhymes. often function as stanza.
extended metaphor differs from regular metaphor in the several connected comparisons are made.
figurative language writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally.
free verse poetry not written in a regular rhythimatical pattern or meter.
haiku a three line japanese poem.
limerick a humorous rhyming, five line poem with a specific meter and rhyme scheme.
lyric poem a highly musical verse that expresses the observations and feeling of single speaker
meter a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in spoken or written language.
ode a formal lyric poem with a serious theme.
poetry one of the three main types of literature, the others being prose and drama. most poems make use of highly concise musical and emotionally charged language.
rhythm the ryhtmatical pattern. the weak and strong stresses are divided by vertical lines called feet.
stanza a formal division of lines in a poem and is considered as a unit.
