Module 2 Test

Freshman Year Semester 2 Module 2 Test

QuestionAnswer
What is the definition of motion? A change in an object's position relative to a reference point
What is a reference point? Something that is stationary that you compare movement to
How does it affect what is in motion? We use it to decide if an object's in motion
What is the most common reference point in physics? The Earth and things attached to it
What is displacement? Distance and direction an object moves compared to a reference point
Is displacement a vector quality? Yes
How do you correctly combine displacements? Same direction- add directions together Opposite direction- take the first distance and subtract the second
What is the definition for speed? Rate an object moves
What is the equation for speed? Speed=distance/time
What is a vector? Including direction and magnitude (size)
How does average and instantaneous speed differ? Average- your overall average speed Instantaneous- your speed at a given time
What is constant speed? Speed that stays the same
What does a graph of constant speed look like? A diagonal straight line
What is velocity? Speed and direction (in a straight line)
How do speed and velocity differ? Speed doesn't have a direction, but velocity needs speed and direction
Is velocity a vector quality? Velocity is a vector quality
Is it possible for two objects to have the same speed but different velocities? Yes, they could have the same speed but be going in different directions
How do you combine velocities? Same direction- add Opposite direction- subtract
What is the definition of acceleration? The rate of change in velocity
What is the equation for acceleration? a= Vf-Vi/t
What is negative acceleration called? Deceleration
Why is an object in circular motion accelerating even though its speed may be constant? You are constantly changing direction when you are moving in a circle, so it is accelerating because the direction in velocity is changing
What is acceleration toward the center of a curved or circular path called? Centripetal
What is projectile motion? A projectile is anything that is thrown or shot through the air
What causes projectiles to follow a curved path? Gravity
What is momentum? Quantity of motion
What is the equation for momentum? p=mass times velocity
What is momentum's units? Kg x m/s
Is momentum a vector quality? Yes
What does the Law of Conservation of Momentum state? Momentum cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred from one object to another
What is the formula for vertical velocity? Vv=gt
What is the numerical value for the constant designating acceleration due to gravity? 9.8 m/s/s
What is vertical velocity's units? meters/second
Is the acceleration of gravity the same for all masses? Yes
Why do objects not fall at the same rate? Air resistance stops objects from falling at the same rate based on the shape of the object
What force causes the air resistance phenomenon? Friction
What is terminal velocity? The fastest an object can fall (fastest possible velocity)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
