| Term | Definition |

| Sarcasm | Satire or irony that often uses bitter and caustic language to point out shortcomings or flaws. |
| Soliloquy | In a drama, a long speech by a character who is alone on stage. It typically reveals the thoughts and emotions of that character. |
| Short Story | A brief fictional narrative in prose that generally includes the following major elements: setting, characters, plot, point of view, and theme. Typically can be read in one sitting and has a rather limited setting and number of characters. |
| Stream of Consciousness | The literary representation of a character's free flowing thoughts, feelings, and memories. Does not employ conventional sentence structure or other rules of grammar and usage. |
| Theme | The central message of a work of literature that readers can apply to life. Some works have them stated and are expressed directly. In most works it is implied and revealed gradually through events, dialogue, or description. Work may have many. |
