| Term | Definition |

| Tragedy | A play in which a main character suffers a downfall. The character is typically a person of dignified or heroic stature. The downfall may result from outside forces or from weakness within the character. |
| Stereotype | A character who is not developed as an individual, but instead represents a collection of traits and mannerisms supposedly shared by all members of the group. |
| Symbol | Any object, person, place, or experience that exists on a literal level but also represents something else, usually something abstract. |
| Setting | The time and place in which the events of a literary work occur. Includes not only the physical surroundings, but also the ideas, customs, values, atmosphere, or moods. |
| Rising Action | The 2nd stage of the 5 stages of plot development. The part of the plot in which actions, complications, and plot twists lead up to the climax of the story. |
