1. What was leading to a more centralized government? The growth of towns and villages, and the breakup of the feudal system, were leading to a more centralized government.
2. What two groups brought their own ways and cultures to England? The Angles and Saxons were the two groups of people that stayed bringing their own ways and cultures to England, when it was invaded.
3. What were two goals that English kings attempted to achieve? Over the next centuries, English kings wanted to hold and add their French lands. Also, they wanted to strengthen their own power over the nobles and the Church.
4. Explain what "common law" was? Over the centuries, the rulings of England's royal judges formed a unified body of law that became known as common law. Today, the principles of English common law are the basis for law in many English-speaking countries, including the United States.
5. What were some problems under King John's rule? King John was cruel to his subjects and tried to take their money. He also alienated the Church and threatened to take away town charter guaranteeing self-government. And lastly, John raised taxes to an all-time high to finance his wars.
6. What was the Magna Carta in English history? The Magna Carta was the most celebrated document in English history. This document, drawn up by English nobles, guarantees basic political rights. It also guarantees what are now considered basic legal rights both in England and the United States.
7. Describe Philip II? Philip II was crafty, unprincipled, and willing to do whatever was necessary to achieve any of his goals.
8. What did Louis IX created? Louis IX created a French appeals court, which could overturn the decisions of local courts. These royal courts of France strengthened the monarchy while weakening feudal ties.
9. Explain the Estates General ranks? In France, the Church leaders were known as the First Estate, the great lords were known as the Second Estate, and the commoners, wealthy landholders/merchants were known as the Third Estate.
10. What was the first step toward central government power? The creation of common law and court systems was a first step toward increased central government power.
