meiji revolution time when Japan modernized itself and borrowed European ideas
zaibatsu powerful banking and industrial families in Japan- after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and that expanded rapidly during World War I
charter oath A five point policy issued by Japan's Meiji emperor, which described Japan's plan for modernization calling for democracy, equality of class, rejection of outdated customs, and acceptance of foreign knowledge.
tanzimat reforms Series of reforms in the Ottoman Empire between 1839 and 1876; established Western-style universities, state postal system, railways, extensive legal reforms; resulted in creation of new constitution in 1876
socialism A system in which society, usually in the form of the government, owns and controls the means of production.
self strengthening movement A late 1800s movement in which the Chinese modernized their army and encouraged Western investment in factories and railways
limited liability corporations a type of business with limited liability for the owners, with the advantage of not paying corporate income tax- they only risked the amount they put in, thus making corporations more appealing.
