BMMS Ch. 7 Vocabulary Poetry

| tone | the attitude a writer takes toward a subject. It can be happy, serious, sad, or hostile. |
| rhyme | the repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following it. ex. trouble and bubble |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhyming sounds at the ends of lines in poems (aabbaa) |
| stanza | in a poem, a group of lines that form a unit |
| onomatopoeia | the use of a word whose sound imitates its meaning. boom, bang, hush |
| free verse | poetry that is "free" of a regular meter and rhyme scheme |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds in words that are close together |
| meter | a regular pattern of accented and unaccented vowel sounds |
| end rhyme | rhymes made by pairing the last word in one line with the last word in another line |
| internal rhyme | a rhyme made within the same line of a poem |
| figures of speech | comparisons between unlike things |
| metaphor | A form of comparison that directly compares two unlike things. "My brother is a rat." |
| simile | comparing two unlike things using like, as, and resembles. |
| personification | speaking of something that is not human as if it had human qualities |
| ode | a poem written to honor someone or something of great importance to the speaker |
| Haiku | A Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons. |
| repetition | repeating something-a word, phrase, a stanza, a sound, a pattern |
| refrain | a word, phrase, line, or a group of lines repeated at intervals |
| poetry | A kind of rhythmic, compressed language that uses figures of speech and imagery to appeal to emotion and imagination. |
| speaker | the voice talking to us in a poem |
| rhythm | A musical quality produced by the repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables or by repetition of other sound patterns. |
| hyperbole | a figure of speech that is an exaggeration “I’ve told you a thousand times.” |
