what is an ALLUSION? figure of speech that indirectly references a person, place, thing, or event
what is an ANAPHORA? word or expression is repeated at the beginning of a number of sentences, clauses, or phrases
what is an ANTITHESIS? the idea of contrasting two opposing ideas, whether as words or phrases, with a parallel structure in writing
what is an ASYNDETON? omission of conjunctions between words, phrases, or clauses
what is DICTION? word choice
what is a HYPERBOLE? exaggeration used for emphasis
what is IRONY? the expression of one's meaning using language that normally signifies the opposite, generally to humorous or emphatic effect
what is MEIOSIS? a deliberate understatement meant to belittle or dismiss
what is a METAPHOR? a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another
what is an ONOMATOPOEIA? a way that writers create sound in their work using words that sound like the noise they make
what is PARALLELISM? a grammatical and rhetorical term for creating a sense of linguistic balance by repeating elements within a sentence
what is REPETITION? intentionally using a word or phrase for effect, two or more times in a speech or written work.
what is a RHETORICAL QUESTION? a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer
what is a SIMILE? compares two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.”
what is TONE? the attitude a speaker or writer expresses toward their subject
what is ZEUGMA? connect two different meanings of the same word together, setting them side-by-side to surprise, delight, or confuse audiences.
