| situational irony | the situation that occurs is the opposite of what was reasonably expected based on the clues provided |
| simile | the comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| symbolism | a physical objet is representative of an idea |
| understatement | under-exaggerating to make smaller in size or significance |
| verbal irony | what is said is the opposite of what is meant |
| alliteration | repetition if the beginning consonant sound in near words |
| allusion | a reference to someone or something the author expects the audience to recognize |
| analogy | a comparison between two things that are alike in some characteristics |
| consonance | the repetition of the same consonant sound in near words, located anywhere rather than just at the beginning as an alliteration |
| dramatic irony | the audience knows information that the characters do not |
| hyperbole | over-exaggeration to create greater size or significance |
| idiom | an expression that makes sense because of familiarity not because of contents |
| imagery | description using the five senses sight, sound, smell, taste, touch |
