Chapter 6: Oral Lang

Review of Concepts for Teaching Oral Language

QuestionAnswer
Many times students with language "difficulties" often face other "deficits" in what areas? Following directions, processing questions, using and understanding sentences, and phonemic awareness (Vaughn and Bos, 2009)0
True or False? A child who is struggling with written language will also have deficits with oral language? True. This happens because both written and oral communication are "interconnected" and effect one another.
Why is teaching oral language development skills important during the school years? Research has shown that students struggling with oral language also have difficulties with reading skills.Direct instruction helps in both areas. (Cooper, Roth, Schatschneider, and Speece, 2002)
What are some ways teachers can effectively teach oral language? Teaching in contexts that are meaningful to students as well as serve a purpose, use conversations and role playing, be sure to build time in to check for understanding and allow students to express their comprehension. (Vaughn and Bos, 2009)
In what ways is incorporating "wait time" effective in producing language? This time allows students ample opportunities to "process" information as well as "formulate" responses if needed. (Includes word retrieval)
How are self-talk and parallel talk different? Self- talk focuses on what teacher is doing and parallel talk is child focused.
Why would incorporating self talk be important with regard to instruction? Allows students to "hear" ways that language can describe actions and thoughts (Vaughn and Bos, 2009).
True/False. Teaching students to classify and categorize words are not helpful. False. This strategy is effective as it taps into long term memory and helps recall words.
How can a student who is fluent conversationally in English, have difficulty understanding academic based vocabulary in English? This is possible due to Cummins theory that second language learners acquire Basic Interpersonal Communication known as BICS prior to more cognitive language. BICS is more social and "easier" for students to comprehend. (Cummins, 1991)
What are some instructional strategies that can be used for teaching students who are linguistically diverse? Simplifying language to be comprehensible, adapt not "dumb down", provide "hands on" experiences, and modeling by teacher.
