QuestionAnswer
a bond between atoms with very different electronegatives is... ionic
diatomic molecue molecule made from 2 atoms
electronegatives between 2 atoms are even slightly different they form... polar covalent bond
atom the basic unit of a chemical element
what types of atoms do nonpolar covalent bonds occur between? identical atoms example O2
in an ionic bond what happens to the electrons? the more electronegative atom seizes all the bonding electrons and becomes a negative ion while the other atom becomes a positive ion
how many bonds in each of the elements in the structural formula have? H-1 O-2 N-3 C-4
put these elements in order from least to most electronegative: C, H, F, O, BR, N, S H, C, S, Br, N, O, F
explain how electronegativity changes throughout the table? values increase from left to right and from top to bottom
if you have a bond between a metal and a nonmetal, which of the two is more electronegative? nonmetal is more electronegative
what are the 2 most electronegative and electropositive elements on the periodic table? F and Fr (repectively)
what is the electronegativity differnce of the atoms listed below? KF 3.16
what is the octect rule? atoms will combine there outer shell to 8 electrons
what is a chemical bond? a force that holds together in the atoms substance
name and explain the 2 major types of bonds? Ionic and covalent
do metals tend to gain or lose electrons? they tend to lose electrons because metals have 3 or fewer electrons in their outer shell
how do you know and atom is stable? outer electron shell is full with 8 electrons
what is a chemical formula? when two elements from the PT are joined together to make another substance
non polar molecule does not have oppositely charged ends
oxidation number the change of atoms based on how many electrons it loses
covalent bond between nonmetals; electrons are shared
polar molecule positive end and a negative end
ionic bond between a metal and a nonmental; electrons are gained or lost
what charge does a cation have? positive charge (+)
what does electronegativity have to do with polarity? in a polar bond the more electronegative atom will have the majority of the electrons
what types of atoms do polar covalent bonds occur between? 2 atoms that share electrons but the electrons are attracted to one of the atoms more than the other (ex. CO2)
Ion an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more of its valence electron; positive or negative charged
polar covalent bond two atoms share bonded pairs of electrons somewhat unequally
nonpolar covalent bond bonds between atoms with nearly the same electronegativity value
electronegativity measures how stongly an atom will attract shared electrons
isotope one of two or more atoms that have the same number of protons but a differnt amount of neutrons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
