Literary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| characterization | how the writer reveals the personality of a character through how they look, the effect they have on other characters, and what they say, think, or do |
| imagery | when the author appeals to the five senses (smell, touch, taste, sight, hearing) to keep the reader interested by helping them experience the text |
| central idea | a message the author is trying to share with the reader |
| figurative language | when the words mean something different than their literal meaning - the author says one thing, but really means something different using a comparison! |
| symbolism | when the author uses an object or word to represent an idea or something else |
| claim | a statement of what the author will prove in an argumentative text |
| contrast | showing differences |
| tone | author's attitude toward a subject; how the author feels |
| mood | how the reader feels after reading a piece of writing |
| conflict | a problem or difficulty; a struggle between opposing forces |
