Literary Terms

TermDefinition
characterization how the writer reveals the personality of a character through how they look, the effect they have on other characters, and what they say, think, or do
imagery when the author appeals to the five senses (smell, touch, taste, sight, hearing) to keep the reader interested by helping them experience the text
central idea a message the author is trying to share with the reader
figurative language when the words mean something different than their literal meaning - the author says one thing, but really means something different using a comparison!
symbolism when the author uses an object or word to represent an idea or something else
claim a statement of what the author will prove in an argumentative text
contrast showing differences
tone author's attitude toward a subject; how the author feels
mood how the reader feels after reading a piece of writing
conflict a problem or difficulty; a struggle between opposing forces
