Electrostatics Final

Physics Final Review

QuestionAnswer
What charge do electrons have? Negative
What charge do protons have? Positive
What charge do neutrons have? Neutral
What is the unit for a charge? Coulomb
How do particles of the same charge react with each other? Repel
How do particles of different charges react with each other? Attract
How do you figure out the overall charge of an object? Add the number of positive and negative charges together
Define friction When two materials rub against each other, electrons can be rubbed off of their atoms
What is the Law of Conservation of a Charge? Charge is neither created nor destroyed
What is a conductor's purpose? Allow charges to flow freely
Valence electrons form a "sea of electrons" Conductor
What is a insulator's purpose? Restrict the flow of charges
Valence electrons are tightly bound Insulator
How does conduction occur? When a charged body touches another neutral or charged one, charges transfer by direct contact
What happens when two conductors touch? Their electrons move freely between the objects until they are evenly distributed
What is it called when charge distributions have equaled out between conductors? Electrostatic Equilibrium
Where do charges usually want to go? Where they can spread out the most
Define induction When a neutral body is charged by bringing a charged object close to the object, but not in direct contact
Define dipole Polar molecules have a positive and a negative side
How do dipoles become polarized? Bringing a charged object nearby
How is electricity different from gravity? Gravity can only attract
Who do electric fields describe? The pulling or pushing of force in a space between charges
Charges in an electric field have what type of energy? Electric Potential Energy
As like charges repel, the electric potential energy converts into what? Kinetic Energy
Work is stored as what? Electric potential energy
Define polarization The separation of the center of positive charge and the center of negative charge in a material
Define coulombs law The force of attraction or repulsion between two charged bodies is directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
